Another Flower Feaster

Hummingbirds aren’t the only zinnia lovers this summer season, the Goldfinches are frequent flower feasters too.

When I glanced out my window the other day, this gorgeous guy was busy plucking petals…

…and munching on the seed that’s found at the base.

His female counterpart was with him, but she was a little farther away and stayed tucked behind the flower she was devouring.

He stayed pretty concealed as well, but it was fascinating to watch his petal plucking, seed snacking process.

Before long, he had most of the petals removed.

Then, he shifted, and I thought just maybe I was going to get a clearer shot of him…

…but something startled him and he quickly flew off.

Still, it was a treat to simply watch him eat. And who knows, maybe he’ll agree to strike a pretty pose before the summer ends.

  1. I love goldfinches. They supposedly like thistle seed, but I don’t have much luck drawing them. Was he pulling off petals to get to the seed in the center?
