Papa’s Place (Part I)

I know it’s said you should save the best for last, but I couldn’t wait to tell you about our favorite place that we visited during our trip to La Fortuna. It’s a hidden gem called Papa’s Place, where the owners (Gerald and Priscilla) have turned their property into a bird and wildlife wonderland. We loved it so much that we ended up going on two different days, so it only seems fitting that I should feature it in two different posts.

There was so much beauty to savor and enjoy, like this little Rufous-tailed Hummingbird that was flitting about, all shimmering in his glittery metallic feathers. Isn’t he gorgeous!

And this Golden-crowned Warbler, whose beauty just defies any words I try to weave together to describe it! I so wish I could have brought him back home with me!

Though not as flashy as many of the Costa Rican birds, a lovely Hoffmann’s Woodpecker showed up as well. It looks a lot like the Red-bellied Woodpeckers that hang out in my own backyard, only it has a splash of yellow and is wearing a tad more eye-liner.

We also had the pleasure of hanging out with several Keel-billed Toucans, whose colorful, comical appearance is absolutely captivating. This one was quite the poser…

…and I believe he (or she) was even mooning me!

Most of the time we stayed near the house, sitting under a covering, looking out over the yard and the flurry of bird activity taking place, but Gerald also led us down some trails into a lush jungle-type area, where he pointed out a Rufous-tailed Jacamar…

…and a Red-eyed Tree Frog. How cool is that!

But do you know what really made the whole experience so wonderful? It was just being with Gerald and Priscilla themselves. We couldn’t have asked for more gracious and thoughtful hosts. I mean, what could be better than sitting out with friendly people, enjoying beautiful birds, and drinking a cup of Costa Rican coffee!

Listen, if you ever get to La Fortuna (and I so hope you do!) you really need to check out Papa’s Place. I promise, you’re gonna love it!
