Buttery Buns

Today we’re celebrating Thanksgiving, which means we’ll be giving thanks for lots of blessings, watching a bit of football, and feasting on delicious food – which always includes some warm buttery buns! But you know what, the buttery buns won’t just be at the table, I’ve got them flying about the backyard too!

Yep! The Yellow-rumped Warblers, affectionately known as “butter butts”, have returned to spend the winter months.

These little birds are busy, busy, busy – which makes them fun to watch, but sometimes hard to get a clear picture of. They’ve been hopping about in the remaining tree leaves looking for food…

…striking fighter pilot poses as they prepare to ward off rival Warblers…

…and splashing about in the fountain. This one below had a quick dip and then flew away in a flash. Although I should I say he “flew away with a flash” since he gave us such a nice glimpse of his buttery behind!

Yellow-rumps also have dabs of yellow on their head (though it’s often hidden) and on each side of their breast as well.

I always get a bit of a thrill when I see these little lovelies for the first time each season.
I wonder which winter arrival will make an appearance next!

And on this day of Thanksgiving, may I just say, that sharing this blog with ya’ll is something I am truly thankful for!

  1. I too am grateful for this blog & your beautiful photos, Kathy. Thank you so much. I especially love the warbler’s left facing portrait against that beautiful red & golden rock with the glistening russet leaves beneath. We can’t feed the birds here where I live in Asheville because we are on a well trodden bear path, but I wish Happy Thanksgiving feasts to you & your feathered friends & fellow readers.
