A Bit of Bird Boasting: Return of the Red Heads

Well, if you’ve been following along, you’ll remember that this “Bit of Bird Boasting” series started because whenever I talked to my Mom, she was telling me about all of these wonderful birds that were showing up in her backyard. And today’s featured guests, the Red-headed Woodpeckers, were at the top of the list of birds she was excited about.

I still don’t have these beauties showing up in my own backyard, so I was thrilled to go and take some pictures of the ones that she’s been seeing.

They love popping in for peanuts…

…and then flying up to the top of her lamp post to enjoy them. I’m trying to convince them to lower the light fixture a foot or so to get it out of the pictures!

It’s hard to imagine a more striking bird with its crisp, bold colors. They’re truly gorgeous!
I’m still holding out hope that a pair will discover my backyard and decide it is the perfect place to raise their little ones. Until then though, I’ll just keep borrowing Mom’s boast-worthy birds!

  1. I never even knew we had these in Michigan where I live until I was at my favorite park with a birder who spotted one. I have never seen them in my yard, and I’ve only seen them at my favorite park in a particular area. But other people around here have them, so maybe someday I will too! One of my favorites now, I love the color block of them!
