Target Practice

One of the things I’m really loving about my new camera combo – the Canon R7 with an RF 100-500mm lens – is the extra reach paired with a faster focus. Okay, so I guess that’s technically two things, but I am loving the set up!

Now, when I stand on my back deck, I am able to get pictures of smaller birds that I would have missed before – like this Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The picture below is taken from about 40 feet away and is what it would look like with no cropping.

But, I typically do crop pictures before I post them, just so you can see more detail in the picture, so the next photo is what it looks like when I zoom in closer.

While I don’t love the glowing green background from the sunlit leaves behind this fella, I do love that his throat feathers were lit up brilliantly at times.

Other times, when the light wasn’t hitting just right, you’d wonder why he wasn’t called a Copper-throated Hummingbird!

He perched just long enough for me to fire off about thirty shots and get a little target practice in!

Hopefully we’ll have some Zinnias blooming before long, and he’ll let me get some shots of him hovering as he nips the nectar!

    1. I was using a 100-400mm before and it is pretty similar. Not too much weight to hand hold, but it does get heavy after carrying it for awhile.

  1. Fantastic evidence of the benefits of your new set up, Kathy!! Enjoy it …. your followers will get even more enjoyment out of the super photos of your backyard birds!

  2. Great captures Kathy, I don’t think the background was a negative, it helped enhance this little guy, placing him as the primary focus.
