Moose Meadow

We spent the second half of our time in Alaska on the opposite side of the Kenai Peninsula, in the town of Homer. This time, the VRBO that we stayed in had a backyard that the owners intentionally left as a moose meadow.

It was so much fun to arrive and immediately see a Mama moose (called a cow) and her twin calves. My first pictures of them were taken through the large back windows that this lovely little over-the-garage apartment had. I wanted to make sure I at least had a couple of photos in case they quickly left.

Then, after firing off a few shots through the glass, I snuck outside so I could try and get some clearer pictures.

I was super careful not to interfere or be in any way threatening, because you really don’t want to mess with a Mama moose. But she never lowered her ears or bristled her back or made any huffing noises, so I guess she sensed that I was friend, not foe.

Moose are herbivores and basically eat all day long, munching on meadow greens, and tree leaves and twigs and bark and anything else that falls in that category!

Occasionally, Mama would give one of the calves a nuzzle…

…and occasionally one of the calves would give Mom a guzzle!

And of course, when one calf did something, the other was sure to follow!

Are they not adorable!

The last picture I took during our time in Homer was of one of the little ones just lounging on the lawn in the drizzly rain.

The moose (yep, the plural of moose is moose!) weren’t the only ones who enjoyed the dandelion covered meadow, the neighbor’s dog did too. She was a happy Labby named Esther, who would play fetch with us as long as we were willing.

She gave us our fix of dog lovin’ while we were away from our two labra-mutts!

When we weren’t watching our trio of moose out back, we were spoiled by this beautiful view of the Kachemak Bay and its bordering mountains.

I felt like royalty each morning, sipping my coffee and enjoying such stunning scenery! What beauty!
