Did you ever notice that if you put a toddler in a room full of toys, they will only want the toy that’s already taken!
Well, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird that’s been hanging out in my side yard clearly has toddler tendencies!
A sweet American Painted Lady was minding its own business, enjoying some zinnia nectar…

…when this demanding little gal decided that out of the hundreds of flowers available, she only wanted the one that was already taken! She did her best to be intimidating and take over the flower…

…but the butterfly refused to budge.
Eventually, the Hummingbird gave up and reluctantly chose to sip from an unoccupied blossom.

Sheesh! There really are enough zinnias to go around!
…so sweet
…and so sassy too!
Great sequence. 🙂
Thank you!
I bet she thought the occupied flower must be the sweetest flower.
I bet you’re right!
Love this little guy Kathy. It may be it remembers this flower is now replenished in nectar and has returned for more, as honeyeaters remember each flower visited and how long they need to take between visits, which is quite remarkable for such small brains.
I have heard that is true about these little hummingbirds, so I’ll bet you are right!
Amazing images, Kathy!
Thanks!
Fabulous series, thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
That hummingbird is zealous in its work and wants to kiss all the flowers!
Beautiful photos!
Thank you!
This event and its photos are the subject of a beautiful children’s story!
