The Toucan Toss

Toucans are oddly beautiful, slightly comical birds that you can’t help but notice when they show up. Their bold colors alone make them captivating, but what’s really a treat is to watch them eat! They have a little ritual that could easily be called “the Toucan toss.”

Let’s start with this Keel-billed Toucan, which is sometimes called a Rainbow-billed Toucan because of his colorful bill. When he showed up, he flew down and landed on the plantains…

…then he snipped a bit of fruit with the tip of his serrated bill…

…and tossed it in the air while tilting back his head, caught it, and swallowed it down!

The Collared Aracari, another type of Toucan followed the same fruit eating pattern…tear, toss, tilt, and swallow!

And, last but not least, a Yellow-throated Toucan did the same.

Are these birds not the coolest! And they put on quite a show when they’re dining!
