Staycation: Mill Creek Falls

Hubby and I are having a bit of a staycation this week, and are exploring some beautiful places that aren’t too far from home – like lovely Mill Creek Falls, located in the Cohutta Wilderness area of the North Georgia mountains.

The beauty of this hike is that as you meander along the trail, you get to see several different waterfalls, the first of which are just some gentle cascades.

When I looked at this tree that had fallen across the creek, it looked like a perfect place to sit…

…turns out I was right!

The second falls are about a 10-15 foot drop, and are also quite lovely…

…but the highlight of the hike is the third falls, which are about a 50 foot drop. The only thing is, to get to the base of the falls you need to descend a steep path of rocks, roots, and mud, which (especially after all the rain we’ve had lately) is super slick. The good news is that previous hikers had left lots of rope to help navigate the challenge, but still, I’d be lying if I said my rear end didn’t come away muddy! Here’s a view of the slippery slope…

…but here’s a view of the falls, which certainly made it worth the effort. Besides, I had quite a sense of accomplishment at having enough balance to make it down and enough arm strength to come back up – neither of which I was all too sure of to start with!

We had fun hanging out here for awhile, wading around in the pool at the bottom, and just chillaxing and enjoying the scenery.

On our way back, hubby grabbed my “souvenir” – a beautiful dead branch to add to the backyard bird perches.

There’s just something about walking on trails where you can constantly hear the sound of running water that is soothing to the soul! Needless to say, a good time was had by all!

Well, a good time was had by us anyway!
