I set out a fresh spread of seed and peanuts the other day and then sat back and watched as this White-breasted Nuthatch made one trip after another to the feeding tray.
He would grab a peanut…

…then head to the top of the stump for take off…

…and then fly away.

Then, a few minutes later, he would return for another nut…

…proceed to the top of the stump…

…and fly away again.

He must have made at least a dozen trips while I was out on the deck, and probably a dozen more after I went inside.
You know, I’m thinking a slight change of name might be in order – perhaps “Nutsnatch” is a wee bit more fitting!
She probably has many mouths to feed in her nest.
Love it!
That definitely seems to be an apt change!
Such lovely images, Kathy.
I was once on the trails at my favorite bird-feeding park, when a nuthatch came and snatched something from my outstretched hand, flew to a tree, tucked it into the bark and came back for another…and another…and another…until my hand was empty. He (or she) now had a whole pantry waiting for the day no one was out there offering snacks.
I can easily picture it. They love to do the dash and stash!
Many birds cache seeds this time of year. They are making hay while the sun shines!
