The leaves around here are hinting that they are about to change colors, and so is the young male Tanager that showed up the other day.


This guy is a Summer Tanager, who will soon be heading south for the winter. When he is young, his feathers are mustard-colored like his Mama, but as he ages, his feathers turn a brilliant red. You can just see hints of it starting to happen.

I’m pretty sure he stopped in with the hopes of having a dip in the fountain, but he was a bit too shy to chase off the other birds that were splashing about. Instead, he just sat and perched for a bit.

What a gorgeous fellow, glowing golden, radiant scarlet, subtle olivine tail feathers. How delightful for all of us that he decided to sit awhile & contemplate his bathing prospects.
