Leaves and Feathers

The leaves around here are hinting that they are about to change colors, and so is the young male Tanager that showed up the other day.

This guy is a Summer Tanager, who will soon be heading south for the winter. When he is young, his feathers are mustard-colored like his Mama, but as he ages, his feathers turn a brilliant red. You can just see hints of it starting to happen.

I’m pretty sure he stopped in with the hopes of having a dip in the fountain, but he was a bit too shy to chase off the other birds that were splashing about. Instead, he just sat and perched for a bit.

Isn’t he just lovely!

  1. What a gorgeous fellow, glowing golden, radiant scarlet, subtle olivine tail feathers. How delightful for all of us that he decided to sit awhile & contemplate his bathing prospects.
