What A N(ice) Day!

Well, our Georgia weather this weekend was icy and snowy – a rarity for us here in the south! Not only was school cancelled, so was everything on my “to-do” list. Instead, I bundled myself up (and my camera lens too) and headed out back to see if I could get some shots before the flurries stopped falling.

It was such a joy to be outside, watching the birds. They put on quite a show as they swooped in to grab some food. How about I start by sharing some of the supporting cast members?

Blue Jay
Brown Thrasher
Yellow-bellied Sapscuker
Eastern Towhee (female)
Purple Finch
Pine Warbelr
Tufted Titmouse
Eastern Towhee (male)

And now…for the star of the snow, I mean show…a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker paid a brief visit.

I love her colors and markings! She is just stunning. And she rarely comes close to the feeding area, so it was a real treat to get a few shots of her.

She didn’t stay too long because a Red-bellied Woodpecker took exception to her presence, but you can see where she gets her name from in her fly-away photo below.

Even though the lighting was dull, and most of the morning a slightly sleety rain was falling, it was such a wonderfully n(ice) day to be out taking bird pictures!

  1. Kathy, your beautiful photos help me get through our own cold and icy winter here in MN. You’re entertaining the birds I wait for in the spring. Your fly away photo of the flicker is a stunner. Thank you! Farrand

  2. This collection of your Snowy Day photos is a treasure, Kathy! I saw my fist cardinal in quite a long while out the kitchen window sheltering in the weather beaten hemlock there from our snowstorm. I was so happy & relieved to see him & wished him well.

    1. Cardinals are one of those birds (like Blue Jays) that are so common in our region that it’s easy to forget how stunning they are! I’m glad you wished him well!

  3. All of them are great, those flurries in the background adds special effect πŸ™‚ I haven’t painted in a while but your lovely birds are inspiring me to go back to paint.
