An Entertaining Encounter

Hubby and I just returned from a week long get away to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, where we walked on the beach…

…saw some lovely sunrises…

…and, of course, ventured out in search of some birds that we don’t typically see in the backyard.

One day, while walking along the marsh at Huntington Beach State Park, we were treated to an entertaining encounter between a Great Egret and a Great Blue Heron.

The Egret had found a successful hunting spot along the edge of a low-tide pool of water, and besides just looking lovely…

…was busy catching fish – itty bitty mini morsels, but I guess if you catch enough they make a meal.

Well, the Great Blue Heron was lurking about on the other side of the pool…

…and when he saw the success that the Egret was having, he flew over and aggressively took over the spot.

He, too, was lovely with his fanned out feathers.

It was fun to watch him snare the fish, especially the way that he used his wings like an umbrella to reduce the water glare and see beneath the surface more clearly.

The fish they were catching really were tiny, but I guess you take what’s available at the time.

And then, after the Heron had caught a few, the Egret made a return flight to reclaim his territory.

Their food feud went on for a good while and kept us thoroughly entertained!
