The Battle of the Birds

This afternoon, I plan to be glued to the television set, watching the battle of the birds, as my hometown Falcons take on the Seattle Seahawks.

Well, yesterday afternoon I got a bit of a sneak preview, as a battle of the birds took place in my own backyard. Β It all started innocently enough, when a Carolina Wren landed on the Bark Butter branch, intent on grabbing a bite to eat.

He had only taken a couple of nibbles when a bossy Robin came swooping in to claim the branch as his own.

The Robin didn’t even have a chance to get a bite before a Red-bellied Woodpecker arrived on the scene, clearly proclaiming that he would now be the one partaking of this coveted delicacy.

He perched there acting all snarley-beaked for a second, and then proceeded to help himself to the Bark Butter.

The Robin didn’t fly far, but merely relocated to the end of the branch, watching and waiting, wearing a rather perturbed expression.

When the Woodpecker was finished, the Robin quickly resumed his place on the branch…

…and once he had eaten his fill, he assumed the stance of a sentry, warding off all other potential Bark Butter partakers.

Meanwhile, a wise Warbler chose the branch less taken, and gobbled to his heart’s content on the other end of the deck.

I hope my Falcons are as feistyΒ as my backyard birds!
