A Ruby-crowned Kinglet has been hanging out in the backyard quite a bit lately.
He has taken a liking to the Bark Butter…

…he hides in the holly bush and scavenges for bugs…

…and he frequently visits the fountain for sips and dips. I thought maybe he would flare out his crown while he was in the water, but I guess royalty likes to bathe incognito!

It wasn’t til he was drying off in a barren shrub by the side of the fountain that he gave a better glimpse of his royal red head feathers.

He’s such a cute, comical little guy!
If I had casually seen him in my yard I would think it was a goldfinch.
You would know he was something different by his twitchiness!
Your patience paid off, Kathy! This little royal fellow finally revealed his crowning glory.
He’s such a little flibberty jibbet!
Your pictures of these birds are truly beautiful, but we live in Maine, we have several bird feeders and I haven’t seen a single bird in more than a month. Do you know what is going on with the birds this year?
I have no idea! Here’s hoping they show up for you soon!
Makes me think of another red-headed prince that got up to all kinds of mischief…
I’m so envious of your view of his scarlet crown – great photos!
Thanks! I hopped over to your blog. Couldn’t find a way to subscribe via Word Press, but enjoyed your photos! Made me want to plan a trip to Texas!
Just yesterday, I visited your blog and one other that had two different subscription methods. I hadn’t seen the “subscribe via WordPress” option before, I’ll look into adding that. Yep, Texas has a lot to offer birders. Come on down!
