A Mid-migration Meal

A young male Rose-breasted Grosbeak stopped by the other day for a mid-migration meal.

I saw him perched up in a sunny spot on a branch…

…then he popped down closer to survey the seed situation.

He sampled the smorgasbord at the stump…

…and then helped himself to the fare at the feeding trough.

He hasn’t finished getting his adult feathers yet, and still has some of the tan tones of his Mama showing. Once he’s mature, he’ll be a bold black and white pattern with the trademark red on his chest – like this fella below, whose picture I took this past April.

These beauties typically stop by for a few days as they head north in the spring, and for a few days as they head south in the fall. Knowing that they’re only here for a short time makes seeing one all the more special!

  1. One of my favorite birds. I didn’t see them much this summer at all. Isn’t it funny he’ll even lose the light stripes on his head when he grows up.
