The Bird With The Buttery Booty

A Yellow-rumped Warbler popped in to pose the other day.

Unlike most Warblers, that only stop by when they are migrating through, these little beauties hang out for the winter months here in North Georgia.

I only saw them a time or two last year, so I was quite pleased when one made an appearance.

Their autumn color tones are soft and subtle, but by the time mating season rolls around the males will darken up considerably, with their beige specks turning black. I wish I could have gotten a better shot of his hindquarters, so it would be more obvious why they are affectionately known as “butter butts.” You can at least get a hint of it in the shot below.

I felt like this lovely little Warbler was putting on a bit of a show for me, hopping from one spot to another, striking pretty poses. I love how the sun is highlighting the blur of fall colors in the next couple of shots, when he popped up to perch on the highest point of the branch.

It always makes me happy to see these birds with the buttery booties hanging out in the backyard.
