Some of the birds that visit the backyard during fall migration come arrayed in their finest autumn attire, like this Swainson’s Thrush that dropped in the other day just before sunset. He (or she) skirted around the edges of the fountain, waiting for a safe time and place to get closer to the water.

Eventually, he hopped down for a quick drink…

…and then flew up to perch on an overhead branch for a few moments.

I wasn’t sure if I would see him again, but the next day, he made a return visit.

Once again, he made his way down to the edge of the fountain to get a drink.

I had to laugh when he opened his mouth to reveal that he had brought a berry with him!

These birds don’t have a throat pouch to store their food, like Blue Jays, but they do have special tongues that help them swallow the berries whole.
I know his color tones aren’t bold and flashy, but I just love the olives, creams and beiges of this bird’s feathers. He definitely came sporting the finest fall fashion!
How cute, with that red berry!
