I went outside to fill the feeders yesterday afternoon and heard the unmistakable Woody Woodpecker call of a Pileated Woodpecker; a moment later, this fellow flew overhead and landed on a neighbor’s pine tree.
I didn’t have time to count to two Mississippi before he had flown away, but I did manage to fire off a quick shot with the camera.

Isn’t he odd looking in the most glorious of ways!
And who knows…maybe one day he will land on the deck and pause to pose for more than a moment! Hey, a girl can dream, right?

Woohoo! We have two that visit, and they are so skiddish! In person they are so prehistoric looking – aren’t they?! They fascinate me!
Beautiful image Kathy, now I know what Woody Woodpecker looked like
I find myself thinking he would make a fun villain in a Batman cartoon!

Wow! Yes, I hope he comes back for a longer sitting. (K)
