I love the busy jays in our backyard, brilliant blue flashes ever on patrol, sirens blaring. They deserve their peanuts. Here is a favorite poem by Emily Dickinson, The Blue Jay.
No brigadier throughout the year
So civic as the jay.
A neighbor and a warrior too,
With shrill felicity
Pursuing winds that censure us
A February day,
The brother of the universe
Was never blown away.
The snow and he are intimate;
I ‘ve often seen them play
When heaven looked upon us all
With such severity,
I felt apology were due
To an insulted sky,
Whose pompous frown was nutriment
To their temerity.
The pillow of this daring head
Is pungent evergreens;
His larder β terse and militant β
Unknown, refreshing things;
His character a tonic,
His future a dispute;
Unfair an immortality
That leaves this neighbor out.
Thank you for your wonderful photos & words. I’m grateful to you. Happy Thanksgiving. Judith
What a lovely comment, and what a lovely poem. I may have to include Miss Dickinson’s words in a future post!

The pleasure is mine!
The blue jays seem to hang around even after all the other song birds have flown the coop.
I feel like mine must spy on me…they seem to know as soon as I put the peanuts out!
