A Squawk And A Scatter

When all the birds scatter
and you hear a loud squawk
you can bet your britches
there’s a nearby Hawk!

Hidden on high
in the treetops concealed
as he searches intently
for an unwilling meal.

His gaze stays fixed
in a predator’s stare
as his war-like cry
fills the backyard air.

His talons are deadly
his wings boast of might
as he lunges to launch
to a new hunting site.

And though I do wish him well
as he seeks out his prey
I’m glad all MY birds
are marked safe for today!

All rhyming aside…

…I was so glad this beautiful Red-shouldered Hawk
lingered long enough for me to get a few photos to share!

    1. Thanks! I was thankful for the long reach lens, as he was a good distance away. And I confess to looking comical as I tried to get the shots, bending and twisting to avoid as many twigs, leaves, and limbs as I could!

  1. My favorite is the lunges to launch! Last week a juvenile tried to dangle a white wing dove from my backyard fence. I saw the happening in time to rescue the dove. You can bet your britches that juvenile let go and the dove flew to safety! My birds have not seen that predator since. 🕊️
