Summer Lovin’

If somebody says the words “summer lovin’,” my brain is sure to launch into the lyrics to the Grease duet. You know –

Summer lovin’, had me a blast
Summer lovin’, happened so fast
I met a girl crazy for me
Met a boy cute as can be…

And honestly, it’s not that I was a Grease film fanatic, but one of the guys in my friend group back in those early teen days was into drama and made the rest of us act out all the parts, including singing the songs.

But the “Summer Lovin'” title of this post has nothing to do with the 70’s movie sensation, and everything to do with the sensational Summer Tanagers that started showing up last week. A male and a female couple (should I call them Olivia and JT?) have been stopping by on a regular basis and boy are they beautiful! I am lovin’ them!

The male showed up first, perching in the treetops, looking like a fluorescent Christmas ornament.

Then he dropped down onto a branch near the feeders, one that we placed there purposefully to give the birds a safe place to pose, I mean perch…

…and after a brief glance about, dropped down onto one of the seed trays.

Typically, Tanagers don’t come to feeders (or at least not my feeders), but prefer to munch on bugs and berries instead. But hey, if he wants to show up and eat seed you will not find me arguing in the least!

The female, whose feathers are a glorious autumn gold, showed up soon after and followed the exact same sequence. First she perched amidst the treetop leaves…

…then she flew down to the branch…

…then she dove down to sample some seed.

Are these birds not stunning? (Obviously that’s a rhetorical question that demands a resounding “Yes!”.)

Later that day, the male landed in a nearby Post Oak and sat posing pretty.

Evidently, he was looking for some dessert because before long he dove off the branch…

…and emerged on a higher branch a few trees over with a tasty morsel trapped in his beak.

I think these beauties might be my new favorite birds, or at least my new favorite bird couple. I mean, they go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong…

Anyway, I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they decide my backyard would make the perfect summer residence and that they get busy with a little summer lovin’ of their own, so there will soon be tiny Tanagers tagging along with them to the feeders!

  1. I saw my first summer tanagers last spring and you’re right: they are dramatically stunning. How lucky to have them right in your own yard!
