The Fine Art of Southern Hospitality

The weather is COLD here in Georgia, and the backyard birds have been greedily gobbling up food as fast as I can fill the feeders. Especially the Pine Siskins, who have declared the feeding trough to be their own personal territory and have been guarding the seed quite aggressively.

They pretty much squabble with anyone, including each other!

These little birds are pesky, but their subtle color pattern really is rather pretty.

When they’re not fussing with each other, the Siskins have clearly communicated to the other birds that that they are not welcome and need to find another place to dine. This poor Bluebird popped in with the hopes of fueling up with a hearty meal…

…but the Pine Siskins quickly flew in to dispute his intention. He tried to hold his ground, but these little finches are feisty!

Eventually, he managed to grab a mealworm and then opted to fly off and eat in peace. I can’t say that I blame him!

You can almost here the little Siskin yelling, “Take that! And don’t come back!”
Sheesh…it would seem the Pine Siskins have failed to learn the fine art of southern hospitality!

Ah well, at least their poor manners make for fun photos!

  1. Dairy, I am visited here in my room, by turtledoves in search of rice.
    It’s a mess!
When they come in groups, I don’t know if they’re joking or fighting for exclusive food. Looks like both.!

  2. Kathy, these Siskins behave a bit like our Noisy Miners, aggressive and bold. Great photography all round. Love the interaction captures with the Bluebird.
