Cold Weather Comfort Food

When the weather gets that wintry chill, what’s your favorite comfort food?

For me, I’d have to say it’s a warm bowl of Chili or the smell of a roast slowly cooking with potatoes and carrots nestled alongside it. But for my birds, hands down, it’s Bark Butter.

I took my camera out the other morning, while the temps were still in the twenties, and watched as one bird after another swooped in to partake of some cold weather comfort food.

A White-breasted Nuthatch showed up several times…

…along with his Brown-headed cousin.

Several Downy Woodpeckers stopped in (though I’ll only include one shot)…

…as did a number of Pine Warblers.

One of our seasonal visitors also made an appearance, a Brown Creeper, who, despite sounding like a comic book villain, actually seems rather amiable. He gets his name from his color, and from his tendency to start at the bottom of a tree and creep his way up.

The bird I most enjoyed watching was this Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, who surveyed the scene…

…and then launched himself over to one of the branches to greedily partake.

I’m gonna include one more shot of him, at a different dining site, just because I think it’s cool how the picture shows the way he uses his tail feathers to balance.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, my absolute any-time-of-the-year favorite food is a nice juicy ribeye and a baked potato oozing with butter!

  1. Oh your last line had me laughing so hard β€œ oozing with butter”! πŸ€£πŸ˜‚πŸ€£

I love that you have such an assortment of birds and appreciative that you know their names. My favorite of this post is the series of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. What great colors and a fun name!

Apparently I learned Sunday that my cold winter comfort food is red chili enchiladas, green chili enchiladas, baked pinto bell pepper beans, tamales and pork stew with potatoes, carrots and onions. When I heard we were about to actually have winter, I went into a one day cooking fanazy! I missed that I forgot the cornbread with Bark Butter!! 🧈
