Right At Home In Southwest Harbor

Well, I mentioned in my last post that I typically took pictures with my cell phone when we were out and about, exploring Acadia National Park. But, there was one place near our Airbnb in Southwest Harbor where I did take my camera and long lens with me, a hidden gem called Charlotte Rhoades Butterfly Park, tucked away off the main street in town. I have to say, I felt right at home here!

There were a handful of Monarchs that hadn’t yet made their way to Mexico, and these stragglers didn’t seem to at all mind me following them from flower to flower.

And, there were a couple of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds buzzing about that weren’t the least bit skittish about my presence either. Needless to say, I snapped one photo…

…after another…

…after another…

Well, you get the idea!

They alternated between nectar nipping and resting on perches.

I had to laugh when this little one had a bit of a stand-off with a bee. You can tell by the posture, it wasn’t a welcome encounter!

Although most of our time in Maine was spent hiking and enjoying the beautiful scenery, it did feel good to spend a couple of hours being my typical birdnerd self!
