Cheerful Chirpers

Carolina Wrens are common in our backyard, but these days they seem to be everywhere!

It seems like every time I go outside, I see one of these beauties perched on a branch (often singing loudly, though not in the picture below)…

…sampling some mealworms, of which they are huge fans…

…or just soaking up some sun.

You wanna know a few fun facts about these little birds?

Well, besides being SUPER loud (and the bold caps are not an exaggeration!) they have a repertoire of about 40 different songs. So, the backyard often feels like a concert arena!

Also, not only are they monogamous, they also stay in the same general area for life.

And finally, they will build a nest just about anywhere! Remember a couple of months ago, when I shared that they had build behind the loveseat cushions on our deck (here’s a flashback photo)…

…well, I have also had them build in empty buckets, brush piles, and – I promise you – if we leave the garage door open for more than a minute, they make a beeline to build in hubby’s tool bag!

Honestly though, these cheerful chirpers just seem to spread joy. You really can’t help but smile when you hear one filling the backyard with their uninhibited singing!

  1. Emily Dickinson said the Jay was a “civic bird”; well so is the Carolina Wren. And I say all that noisy, verbose carrying-on is the Wren as town-crier doing his round of civic announcements to the neighborhood. I hear the commotion but I don’t speak Wren. sadly.
