Better Than Bambi

Growing up, I was never a huge fan of the movie Bambi. I mean, other than Thumper (and who doesn’t love Thumper!) it was just too sad!

But, I am a fan of baby deer, so when this cute little fawn paid us a backyard visit while we were spending time with our grandgirlies last week, I was quite excited.

It was definitely a curious little thing…

…and at one point began racing and romping along the fence line.

It seems that Mama was in the yard next door, and before long, she hopped over the fence to join the youngster.

Then, she led her little one to another place to graze, where they wouldn’t have to worry about the lady with the lens!

Ahhh…so much better than Bambi!

  1. They y are so precious ! When our local does have their babies, they’ll sometimes creep into our back yard and explore…even the open side of our shed. Too cute!

  2. We’ve had a crazy number of fawns visit in the last two weeks (west-central WI). It’s fun when they need to release some energy!

  3. I’ve never read Bambi, nor seen the movie. I refuse. I too usually have fawns and mamas in my backyard. This year we have only seen one mama with one baby. A few years ago there were three very young fawns hanging around the neighborhood together with no mama ever seen. They got bigger and bigger together. We called them the three amigos. Once they started playing in our yard chasing each other around and around a stand of white pine we have way out at the back. It was soooo much fun to watch. Usually our mam deer has twins. I don’t know if there were two mamas of the three amigos or some mama had triplets and then died. Either way the three of them looked out for each other and were adorable together.

For several years, we had a deer that would come up to the edge of our yard and invite our dogs to run up and down the fence line with her. It was so crazy. We called her “dog deer.”

      1. That’s sweet. Several years ago I was taking Katie, on leash, around our house toward the back yard. We came across mama deer and her twins quite close to the house. Everybody froze. Then one of the babies moved behind mom, and the other once advanced toward us, put his head down and pawed at the ground.

I told Katie it was time to go inside and we retreated as quietly as we had come.
