“An unexpected gift at an unexpected time” – that’s the advice reclusive writer William Forrester (played by the brilliant Sean Connery) gives his young prote’ge’ on how to win the girl’s affections in the movie Finding Forrester.
Well, occasionally I give my backyard birds an unexpected gift by filling the hollowed-out cavity in the Dogwood with peanuts. I’m fairly certain I won the affections of a handsome Red-headed Woodpecker with just such an offering this afternoon.
He would show up…
…peak inside…
…pluck out a peanut…
…then fly off to the edge of the yard to devour it.
He repeated this process at least five times while I was out there, and probably many more once I had gone inside. He was so enjoyable to watch.
And speaking of enjoyable to watch – Finding Forrester is one of my all-time favorite movies; if you’ve never seen it, please find it and watch it. You won’t regret it!
Isn’t he a beautiful bird. Your photography is superb. Thanks for taking the time to share it.
Truly my pleasure!
❤
Wouldn’t you like to question the person who officially named this fellow the “Red bellied woodpecker,” since the only red is on his head?
Does seem like a strange name, but when you see the fellow that got the name Red-headed Woodpecker it all makes sense!
What a fun idea. And a beautiful picture.
On occasion, I have done this and had birds guard it and even add seed to it!
So that’s how you get all those beautiful birds to show up in your yard. He is a handsome fellow. I need to try it.
The way to a bird’s heart does indeed seem to be through his stomach!
Great shots Kathie, and how this little fellow is storing his stash of food for winter. I will check the movie out also.
I think he was taking turns…a peanut to eat and then a peanut to hide!
What a beauty!
Agreed!
Beautiful photographs Kathy 😀 Thanks for sharing the movie title, I’ll definitely watch.
