For the past several posts I’ve been sharing recaps from our recent trip to the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Well, I still have some photos I want to share, but I thought we’d take a bit of a backyard bird intermission since I had a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker show up yesterday and I wanted to share him with you.
Amidst the drips and drizzle, this handsome fellow dropped in (you can tell it’s a male by the red chin) and momentarily landed on a Dogwood tree by the deck. I rarely get a chance to take a picture of one of these guys, so I was glad to have the camera handy.
Aren’t his markings cool? You can see how he could easily blend in with the bark.
His visit was a sweet surprise.
Now, stay tuned for more wildlife refuge recaps. 🙂
Be prepared, a very good motto.
A very good motto indeed!
Very cool markings and I’ve never seen one, even in a picture and enjoyed seeing this one.
My husband mentioned that with this guy it is not just his pattern but his texture. Thought that was a good word for him.
That’s true – he sure blended right into the tree trunk. Amazing capture you got.
Calling idiotic fellow road users “Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers” will from now on be my cure for road rage… 😀
Please don’t tell this handsome fellow that though, wouldn’t want to hurt his feelings!
Ha! That is funny!
WOW WOW WOW I Love Bird

He’s a handsome one. Very nice!
So handsome and gorgeous!
Wow, great pictures. I have never seen one. He is indeed handsome and colorful too.
I like his colorful feathers! What a beauty he is! Do you ever find feathers of the different birds in your yard? ❤️
Sometimes. I love the Blue Jay feathers.
I found the feathers of a Northern Flicker (red shafted) at the lake a few years ago. 😊 It prompted me to puchase a book on bird feathers for identification.
