Red-headed Rejoicing

There was much rejoicing in my backyard yesterday, as my Red-headed Woodpecker couple has returned!

Okay, so I don’t think the other birds were really all that thrilled, especially their Red-bellied rivals who have a nest cavity in my Oak tree, but I sure was happy to see them!

These beauties have been seasonal visitors for the past five years or so, and it is always a thrill when they make their first appearance of the spring. I also find that I breathe a sigh of relief, because I’m never quite sure whether or not they will be back.

They tend to be a bit shy when they first arrive and it takes them a little while to remember that the lady holding the camera is the same one who fills the peanut feeders!

These birds are definitely one of my absolute favorites, and I’m hoping these pictures are just a preview of coming attractions!

  1. I’m so excited to watch them through your lens. I have never ever seen one. My birdbook says they are here in Michigan, but in my whole life (and that’s a lot of years) I never knew they were here, never saw them. I’ve been in lots of woods and watched lots of birds, but these guys have stayed hidden. So I’m SOOOOO glad you have them!

    1. I am hoping they stick around, because the Red-bellied Woodpeckers and the Downys are none too happy and are in full out battle mode.
