When it comes to beauty, the Red-headed Woodpecker is in a league of his own!
I was over at my folk’s house yesterday afternoon (which is only ten minutes from my house) when he made his first appearance of the season, logging in at bird number six on the list!

Funny story, Mom and I had been out and about, and I called my Dad and said, “Hey, when we get back I want to try and take some pictures for the Thirty-Bird Challenge. I’d really like to get a Red-headed Woodpecker, so go out and make his clicking sound in the backyard.” Well, I was teasing, but Dad took me up on the challenge and sat outside playing a youtube video of this guy’s mating call! It must have worked because when we got back he was waiting in the yard!

He wasn’t coming to the feeders yet, as he was busy darting from tree to tree, letting a Red-bellied Woodpecker know that this territory wasn’t big enough for the both of them.

I am hoping to lure these beauties to my own backyard, but until they show up here, I’ll just show up there! My folks casa es mi casa, right?
He’s a beauty. Clever dad!
Clever Dad indeed!
Wonderful photos of this gorgeous guy, Kathy. I hope his cousin arrives at your place very soon. Maybe you should just go ahead & give him a call.
I did play the youtube video in my backyard too! Here’s hoping!
He’s certainly not shy to show off!
