Lunch Bunch: Two Tiny Twitchers

One of my favorite things to do in this gorgeous fall weather is to take my “lunch break” out on the deck. First I fill the feeders, then I sit down to see who will join me. I’ve had quite a few visitors, so rather than share them all at once, I thought I’d just post about a couple at a time.

So, let’s start with the two tiny twitchers – the Carolina Wren and the Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

These autumn-toned wrens are perky little birds that always seem to have a twitch in their tail and a pep to their step.

This little one showed up to investigate (and partake of) some peanuts I had put in a nook in the branch.

Although the Carolina Wrens hop all over the place and rarely sit still for a second, they are not nearly as twitchy as the Ruby-crowned Kinglets – like this fella that recently showed up to hang out for the winter months.

His little wings are always moving.

He will nibble at one spot and then flit over to the next spot.

They are challenging, but fun, to try to take pictures of because they are tiny and always on the move.

I wish he had given us a full view of his crimson crown, but perhaps he will before the season is over.

  1. Wonderful photos, as always, Kathy. The wren hopped & twitched all around on the front porch yesterday as I sat out there trying to read. But I couldn’t offer it a peanut butter spread, alas. The Asheville bears, huge lunch interlopers, would just come twitching around in a hot Asheville minute.

      1. Thank you for thinking of me, Kathy. A huge tree fell on our roof & made holes in the ceilings of the upstairs condos, but I’m on the first floor & I am fine here on the Reeds Creek, which behaved beautifully after it had risen up into my car back in the summer! A city team had come by the week before Helene & cleaned out the culverts under the road (of dead trees & brush) for the first time in 4 yrs.! & the creek rose up to the top of its banks but not up into our yard. It was just the long weeks w/o power or the internet or my old phone & we have still have polluted water, they are saying maybe till mid December… But everyone has been so kind, wonderful & helpful. It has been a challenge for sure, but with so many terrible tragedies & so much destruction, I feel lucky & blessed. It will take a long time though for the area to ever recover, & I’ll never see the return of our glorious tree canopy.

  2. You captured at least a spot of that ruby crown! I know we’re not supposed to assign personalities to other species, but these little birds look so pugnacious. Another great post!
