Backyard Beauty Contest

If there were to be a bird beauty contest, at least in my backyard, the male Eastern Bluebird could easily take the trophy!

Every time one shows up, you can’t help but catch your breath a bit.

At first glance, you might think their vibrant blues are artificially enhanced, but I can assure you he is simply wearing his God-given garments!

They love to gobble up mealworms…

…drink from the water dish…

…and bathe with gusto in the fountain. (They’d be a contender for the “best bather” award as well!)

But they also seem to have a penchant for simply striking pretty poses so that we mere mortals who lack such brilliant attire can marvel at their beauty!

Yes…there would be lots of runners up in the backyard beauty contest, but this fella would surely take first place!

  1. As a child, I was a birder. My science projects for our annual Science Fair were always about them, their migration patterns, why females were always less showy, etc. Raised in upstate New York where the bluebird is the State bird, I never in all those years saw one. But now, living in the interior of British Columbia, I’ve had glorious interactions with our gorgeous Mountain Bluebird, which isn’t at all timid and allows itself to be photographed from only a short distance away, as it perches on the tops of tall grasses.

These photographs simply take my breath away. These….these, define the word ‘beauty’.
    Thank you
