Perfection In Process

We had another first time visitor in the backyard this past week – an Indigo Bunting!

This young fellow is an immature male that is just starting to molt into his glorious adult feathers.

He stopped by, probably mid-migration, and boy was he ravenous! He ate seed from the stump…

…then he flew and ate from the “trough”…

…then he sampled some fare from the peanut platform…

…and eventually made his way over to munch on some mealworms.

He even gave Bark Butter a try, and liked it too!

He definitely was fueling up! Oh, and I learned a fun fact about these beauties – they migrate at night and use the stars to navigate. Isn’t that cool!

He wasn’t nervous about any of the other birds, but whenever a squirrel came along he would fly up into the overhead branches for a bit.

His colors are blotchy right now, as he changes from the tannish tones of his Mama to the brilliant blues of his Daddy, but when he is fully mature he will be absolutely stunning.

I guess you could say he is the picture of perfection in process!

I sure do wish I could entice him to stay here for the summer months and pose for me in his full grown feathers! Who knows, maybe he’ll remember this spot and stop back by in the fall!

  1. Perfect timing for you to have seen this gorgeous bird in progress. Very cool navigating by the stars. He might be tempted to stay in your yard because the food sources are glorious. But if not, fingers crossed that he will visit again in the fall!! 👏👏👏

  2. What a beauty! I hope he will stay around before moving on. I know there are indigo buntings around here sometimes but I’ve never seen one. I’ve already started seeing the Painted Buntings at my feeder.
