What’s Good For The Goose

The other evening, hubby and I were sitting out on the deck when a blur of yellow caught my eye. It was a female Summer Tanager who had flown down to investigate the fountain.

I tried my best to stealthily sneak into the house to grab my camera, but by the time I made it back outside she had retreated to the edge of the yard. Then, for the next half hour or so, I sat and watched while she carefully made her way back to the water.

First, she perched on a nearby overhead branch…

…then, she flew down and landed on the Cyprus stump that sits at the top of the fountain.

After striking a pretty pose or two…

…she made her way to a rock in the upper level of the water that serves as a landing place for the birds.

In no time at all, she hopped off into the water…

…and before long she was helping herself to a luxurious, leisurely bath.

The picture below will prove the pun, that this gal is a real head turner!

I love how well her colors blend with the rocks beneath the water. And, I love that hubby had just done a “refresh” on the fountain earlier in the day, so the water was exceptionally clear.

When she wasn’t splashing, she was just soaking in the water and looking downright stunning! I had a hard time deciding which pictures to put in the post. I mean, should I share this one?

Or this one?

In the end, I opted for this one!

I’m gonna go ahead and tell you that while this lovely lady was bathing, there was a watcher in the woods. A male Summer Tanager was taking in her every move! So, stay tuned, because we’ll soon see that the old adage is true…what’s good for the goose, is definitely good for the gander!

  1. Is this bird actually lying on her back in the water at some point, or am I seeing that wrong? One thing is for sure, she’s having a great time! A fantastic series of photos!
