Dauphin Island is known for its abundant Pelican population, and since it seemed like they spent their days simply “sittin’ on the dock of the bay” – I took to calling them all Otis!
When these birds weren’t lounging on the docks, they could often be seen standing (or snoozing) on the rocks.
Sometimes one would fly by….like this fine but funny-looking fellow…who looks to me like one of those cartoon birds getting ready to deliver a baby…
and other times they would leisurely drift along in the water.
When they would stand and stretch their enormous wings, it seemed as if they were competing to be named “The Maestro of Mobile Bay.”
I had so much fun taking Pelican pictures – partly because they are rather slow moving and easy to get in focus, and partly because they seem like a throwback to some prehistoric era.
I really did hate to say goodbye; so instead, I simply said, “See you later, Otis!”
What’s terrific series!! Amazing looking birds I haven’t seen myself. Got to go south😊
I hope you do get to go someday!
Wow! Such beauties!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
They are so peculiar, but lovely in their own way!
Oh wow – these are AMAZING shots!!!! I am particularly drawn to #3 🙂
I looked back…I’ll bet the third shot appeals to you because it shows life and action. 🙂
Terrific shots, Kathy!
Thanks!
Nice shots and interesting idea.
Thank you!
Stunning picts! 🙂

Wow, so special! Otis fits them perfectly! They look a bit like those flying dinosaurs…
They do!
They are most definitely an Otis!!! I’m sure I will remember this next time I see a pelican, I just adore them!!!
