First of the Year Forecast

Happy New Year!

Here in northwest Georgia, the first day of the year started with a forecast of possible snow flurries. Alas, no white flakes fell to the ground, but we did have quite a flurry of birds, and man were they hungry!

Some were nibbling bark butter off of the branches.

Downy Woodpecker
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Red-bellied Woodpecker

Some were grabbing food from the recently added “tree trough.”

Eastern Bluebird
Carolina Chickadee

Some were sampling seed at the stump.

Tufted Titmouse
Northern Cardinal

Some were just stopping in for a quick drink.

Hermit Thrush

And some were grabbing a bite to eat from the new peanut pole, which has quickly become a popular place. It has three holes drilled into the side that are stuffed with bark butter and peanuts.

Pine Warbler
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
White-breasted Nuthatch

Although snow would have been lovely, hanging out this morning with the bird flurry was a great way to start the new year!

  1. Thanks for posting this, Happy New Year! I do enjoy seeing the variety of birds that you have!

  2. My goodness, that’s quite an array of beautiful birds!! Thanks for sharing your amazing photos.

  3. Hi Kathy, Happy New Year! I was just wondering, do you include something special in the bark butter you provide to the birds?

    1. I buy the Bark Butter from Wild Birds Unlimited, and add a little hot sauce to deter the squirrels. Sometimes I mix in some peanuts when I spread it. It’s definitely a favorite of the backyard birds.
