Our side yard zinnias were late bloomers this year, but they’re finally blossoming in all their multi-colored brilliance.
This makes me oh-so-happy, and it makes the Goldfinches oh-so-happy as well. These little birds have mastered the fine art of flower feasting.
This fellow below (sporting his bright summer feathers) was picking petal after petal, busily munching away. He started on one side of the flower…

…going at it from every angle…

…aiming to get the seeds that are found at the base of the petals.

Then, he moved to the other side, and continued his feasting.

Once the flower had been picked to the last petal, he flew off to another section of the zinnias…

…and gave me a pretty pose before choosing his next dining spot.

Zinnias and Goldfinches are definitely a winning combination!
I didn’t know goldfinches did that. I have zinnias out by the driveway. They’re beautiful right now. I have goldfinches out back. Also beautiful. So far I haven’t noticed this behavior.
