More Than Just A Pretty Poser

A male House Finch has been showing up in the backyard lately, and giving me one photo opp…

…after another…

…after another…

…after another!

But this guy is more than just a pretty poser, he is also a boisterous bather!

After I snapped several shots, I switched to video. As you watch this (shaky) clip, notice how he ramps things up a notch when the female finch appears. I can’t help but laugh when he gives her a glance and then really starts splashing with gusto!

He stayed for a good long while (much to my delight) and then flew off to poof and preen his feathers.

Whether he is posing or splashing, he sure is a handsome fellow!

  1. What an absolutely stunning little bird—such beautiful colors. I don’t think we have this species here in Croatia, but it reminds me of the Common Linnet (Linaria cannabina).

  2. It’s winter here in New Jersey, and it’s been far too cold to keep a birdbath from freezing over. The House Finches, Juncos, Nuthatches, Black‑capped Chickadees, Tufted Titmice and the rest still show up at the feeders all day, though.
