Delightful Dilly-Dalliers

Perhaps because October was unseasonably warm this year, a number of the migrating birds seemed in no particular hurry to head farther south. Especially the Warblers; they just kept showing up.

Here are three more little beauties that stopped in at the fountain to wet their feathers before continuing their journey to warmer weather.

This female Blackburnian Warbler came by…

…but her dip was so quick that I only got a picture of her flying back out of the water. The males have much darker markings with bright red-orange throat patches.

This Chestnut-sided Warbler also popped in, first surveying the scene…

…and then enjoying a leisurely soak. This one is probably a female, but it is hard to tell in non-breeding season.

And last, but not least, this Black-throated Green Warbler paid a visit. She (the male has a solid black throat patch) was timid at first…

…but once she deemed the area safe, her timidity vanished and she had quite a rowdy bath-time.

When she was finished, she perched on the edge of the birdbath for a few final feather flicks (yowza, say that three times fast!) and then flew off out of sight.

I’m gonna miss having such a wide variety of Warblers hanging around, but hopefully they will put a pin in this location and return in the spring! And hopefully, they’ll choose to dilly-dally then too!
