Choreographed Chaos

Earlier this week, a good-sported friend and I went for a walk along the Oostanaula River. I say “good-sported” because the temps were topping out quite close to triple digit degrees. Still, our goal was to enjoy each other’s company, have some good conversation, and see if we could find some Cliff Swallows – and I’m happy to report that we succeeded at all three!

These highly social birds typically show up for the summer months, and build their mud nests attached to the supports under the bridge that crosses the river.

It’s funny, because when we first walked pass the bridge, I could see tons of nests but no birds – not even one! Then, on our return trip, there were literally about a thousand Swallows dipping and darting and dashing all about. It was a whirlwind of activity!

Between the distance to the bridge, the wonky lighting, and the constant motion, getting a clear shot was just not going to happen. But that didn’t dull the enjoyment of watching these busy birds fly about, popping in and out of their nests. Honestly, it was like choreographed chaos!

I’m thinking of going back and trying to get some better pictures, but for now, this blurry bunch will have to suffice!
