Before I even begin, let me confess that I had to Google whether the correct spelling was “whir” or whirr” – and the answer is, “yes!” So, I chose the double “r” variety because it just seemed to better carry the desired sound effect!
At any rate, I was out on the deck the other day and a whirring of wings caught my attention. It was a Ruby-throated Hummingbird that was darting about sampling nectar from the flowers.
It drank from the salvia…

…and then from the blossoms on the obedient plant – which really should be called the disobedient plant since it grows wherever it dang well pleases!

But do you know what is better than a whirr of wings? A double whirr of wings!
Although I have featured this cool creature in a previous post, a Snowberry Clearwing Moth (aka – a Hummingbird Moth) also showed up to feast on the flowers.

I just love watching these fascinating day moths.
I think one of the things I love most about photography is the element of surprise. You just never know what beauty you’re going to be blessed with!
I love hummingbirds. I wish we had them here in Belgium too! We do have something rather similar, though: the Hummingbird Hawk-moth, or Kolibrievlinder. Yes, if we don’t have the bird, apparently we just combine the name with a moth we do have. 🙂
