I went outside this morning thinking I was going to replenish the bird food, but lo and behold, I encountered an unexpected, and uninvited, “guest!”

This big ole opossum was perched on what we call the “seed trough” – a thin tree trunk with a section hollowed out to hold a bunch of seed.

I know these critters roam about the yard at night, but they are usually gone by the time daylight rolls around.

This one was in no particular hurry to leave, and was helping himself to the remnants of yesterday’s seed. You can get a pretty good look at his teeth as he is scraping food out of the trough.

I know they’re really not aggressive animals, and even eat a lot of unwanted pests, but I confess to not wanting one as a regular diner. Maybe if they didn’t have such a rattish tail I would reconsider!

When he (or maybe she) had finished eating, he licked his “lips” and washed his face…

…and then, eventually (thankfully!) left the area.

I really can’t decide if I find opossums to be creepy or kinda cute. What say ye?
