Titmouse Tidal Wave

The gray, cloudy skies made the backyard a bit too dark for picture taking today; instead, I sat on the front porch with my camera to see if any birds showed up at the water lantern.
When I got this as a Mother’s Day gift a few years ago, I had no idea how popular it would be with the birds.

The first to arrive was a Brown Thrasher.  He helped himself to a drink, and then perched on top of the lantern to give the yard a good glance.

Next came a Carolina Chickadee, whose sip and dip was so were so fast I might have to start calling them “Quickadees!”

My favorite visitor of the afternoon was the Tufted Titmouse, mostly because it was the bird who seemed content to linger the longest.

After first helping himself to a refreshing drink, he hopped right on into the cup and splashed away.  I love the liquid fireworks!

When he perched on the edge of the drinking/bathing dish, I thought he was getting ready to fly off into the holly tree.

Instead, he hopped right back in the water for a ferocious finale.  He created quite the tidal wave!

He looks so cute in his tiny tub.

Finally, after a few more flicks of his feathers, he made his departure.

He really was a most enjoyable afternoon guest.
