It seems as soon as I turned the calendar page from April to May, the migrators started showing up in full force! So, I thought, why not do a few “Maygration” posts and share with ya’ll some of these beauties that are stopping by!
Let’s start with the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, which is an absolute favorite of mine. This fellow, with his sweet song, dropped in to fuel up for the rest of his journey.

You can see that his mighty beak is tailor-made for seed crushing.

It’s easy to tell that this one is a male because of his bold, vibrant colors. The females (pictured below in a shot I dragged out of the archives) are beautifully clothed in coffees and creams.

After munching for quite some time, he flew over to the fountain area…

… and dropped down for a drink.

Then he settled in for a leisurely feather soaking. He would splash and then pause…

…splash and then pause…

…and then splash some more – each time a bit more exuberant than the time before!

Eventually, he flew up to the treetops to dry off, and then, with his belly full and his feathers clean, he kindly dropped back down and obliged me with a few more shots.

I don’t think I’ll get any arguments – this is one gorgeous guy!
Beautiful bird and a great set of shots, I got to see one on a visit to Canada a few years ago, gorgeous wee bird
Handsome guy! π
He knows it too, that’s why he’s working it like a supermodel. π
What striking coloring! Such a cool visitor.
You are absolutely right! Definitely a gorgeous guyβ¦ Even when wet!π I never realized how very different the females look as I donβt see grosbeaks very often. I really enjoyed the lovely way you describe her unique beauty.
