Disturbing the Feast

When I was outside earlier today, a swarm of Goldfinches descended on the seed stump.

Dressed in their olive tones of winter, they were having quite a feeding frenzy – with regular arrivals and departures.

Then, all of a sudden, my next door neighbor, who was out working in his yard, clanked a piece of machinery, and while the volume didn’t quality as disturbing the peace, it definitely resulted in disturbing the feast!

And in case you were curious, their scattering lasted but a moment, and in no time at all they returned to resume their feasting!

  1. It’s always interesting to me, how despite the alarm, there is always one or two that stand their ground, alert, but get back to feeding right away. Cornell did a study about that and while it is risky behavior not to be cautious, for the most part they expend less energy and most of the time come out ahead.
