He’s Back!!!

We interrupt this seemingly endless flow of birds-bathing-in-the-fountain photos with a special announcement: He’s back!

Yes, “my” Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (one of my absolute fall favorites) has returned for the winter.

I named this fellow “Winston” several years ago (though for the life of me, I can’t remember why!) and I watch and wait for him to make his way back each year. Now, I can’t swear that it’s the same bird, but his pattern has become so predictable that I feel safe saying that it is.

I know that he will first call out from the edge of the yard, and then make his way over to the Post Oak Tree.

Then, he will hop down the tree…

…and head over to his favorite bark butter branch. I have several of these branches spread about, but this always seems to be the spot he picks first.

He stayed and nibbled for a good while before flying off.

I’d love to tell you that he returns each year because he just misses me so much, but we all know it’s the bark butter that keeps him coming back!

One thing’s for certain, this gorgeous guy sure does make my heart happy!
